Imagine:  You are interviewing for your dream job… the interview is wrapping up, and you think you have nailed it.  Before the interviewer stands up to walk you out, they will ask the inevitable:

“Any last questions we can answer for you”?

THIS IS THE MOMENT YOU SET YOURSELF APART FROM THE COMPETITION AND LAND THE JOB.  It’s time to land the Ringside Knockout Punch.

A typical response to this ranges from the bad: “No I think you answered everything for me”.  Or the standard and average response: “So what are the next steps in the interview process”.  Neither of these responses alone are going to ensure you land the job.  Below are the 3 ways to effectively deliver the knockout punch in a job interview to ensure you get the job.

1. Close Yourself

Let’s start with the question that is asked the least but will have the most impact on you getting the job.  This is a question that people that are well prepped, confident, and successful at getting what they want ask.  This question will make you stand out amongst the competition and land the job.  The question is:

“Given what we have discussed today, do you have any concerns about my fit for this position?”

The reason that this question sets you apart is that even though you feel like you nailed the interview, no hire is perfect in every way.  Asking them to get any concerns about you out in the open before you leave gives you the opportunity to overcome any objections.  It gives you the chance to explain, qualify, and provide support that backs up why you are the right person to be offered this job.

Now remember, when you ask this question, be prepared for them to answer it.  Don’t be defensive, listen, take the feedback and concerns.  Then provide facts, proven results, examples, and insight to present your case so that they feel better about this concern not being an issue and about you being the right person for the job.

2.  Ask for the job

Once you have discussed the reasons you would be the best candidate for the job, let them know that not only are you interested, but that you want the job.  Be genuine, direct, and explain why.  This statement should sound like:

“This is what I want to do. I really feel like this is the right job for me both in terms of what I bring to the table but also my career aspirations. I am passionate about what this organization does and what this role is all about – I really want this job!”

3.  Find out next steps

This is an important one to ask so that you know expectations, timeline, and what you need to do to prepare so you can plan accordingly.  Make sure you ask this question in a way that comes across as interested in moving forward, not demanding and rushing the interviewer for a decision.  It should sound something like:

“So what are the next steps in the interview process?”

So are you ready to deliver the Ringside Final Knockout Punch at the end of your next interview? Make sure you practice and execute the following closing lines to ensure you land the job:

  1. Close yourself: “Given what we have discussed today, do you have any concerns about my fit for this position?”
  2. Ask for the job: “This is what I want to do. I really feel like this is the right job for me both in terms of what I bring to the table but also my career aspirations. I am passionate about what this organization does and what this role is all about – I really want this job!”
  3. Know the next steps: “What are the next steps in the interview process”

The final Ringside Knock-Out punch is the difference between those that get the job, and those who don’t.
